Post subject:  Singing after pneumonia?

I tried to search for this topic, so either I'm lame or its hard to search from a cell phone, because I can't find anything.

For the first time ever, I got pneumonia. Only one sided, never lost the ability to breathe comfortably or anything, but cough/fever/no strength to get out of bed finally got me to go to the doctor. (Sunday)

I'm on day 3 of antibiotics, still in bed feeling very weak, but doctor said if I took good care of my voice & rested it he doesn't see any reason I can't do my shows this weekend.

I'm thinking...no. I'm terrified to even hum a tune right now.

I have a 45 minute spot at a festival Saturday, which I think I might be comfortable doing. Then a simple acoustic show sunday where I won't be doing 100% of the vocals, so I think I'd be ok. Maybe. But i also have a regular 4 hour show Saturday night that I'm thinking I need to cancel.

Anyone deal with a similar situation? I've read online and some people say to wait a few weeks. Or am I good to go once the cough clears up?

Part of it is...I'm literally scared to try and scared I'll make it worse. The last thing I want to do is cause permanent lung damage. Am I over reacting to a light case of pneumonia?

You want to take it easy for a while. Any overexertation can bring it back in full force.

when i'm sick but can still make it to karaoke i go. but i will announce i'm not feeling well and not going to sing that night.

all my singers are always good with it, truthfully they have a better chance to get a couple extra songs in if i'm out of the rotation.

I say if you feel well enough to run the machine then do it!

I use a headset mic for announcing and normally sing off it if I am still in the rotation but usually, I am one and done.

I wish! my singers mostly regulars are mad if i don't sing every round, even if i have 30 singers they will still yell at me to put my name back on the list.

But i stick with a max and I absolutely cut myself off at 25 singers.

put yourself first and get yourself healthy! you are your own #1!

It doesn't mean that I stop singing. If a singer asks for help or a duet partner, I will step in but as to tsking an official spot in the rotation, of I hit at least 8 singers witj multiple requests in ir reach a crrtain time of the night, I pull myself out of the rotation to allow my singers more times at bat. It is called putting my singers first. As to the pneumonia issue, I am in complete agreement with you. When it comes to uour health, take care of #1 and that's yourself in this case.

Geez, make a post and promptly forget about it!

If it were karaoke, I wouldn't have been so worried, because I could opt out of singing if I wanted to. These were my band shows. And I'm lead singer. So the 4 hour show was scaring me.

But...i did them, and it worked out fine. The 4 hour show was a bit tough, but other than getting really worn out, I made it. I didn't die & my lung didn't collapse, & my voice held out fine, so all is well. Lol.

The tiredness & the deep coughing continues, but that's to be expected I guess.

I've sang with the remnants of a cold and, honestly, if its the end stages of congestion, it usually seems to rattle things enough to help me get to coughing it out next day. But this was my first time ever having pneumonia, so I wasn't sure of myself.

BILLY? Omg! It's been forever. Please tell me you're subbing songs? :clapper:

Billy (Max...whoever you are these days, lol)...

I haven't recorded karaoke in years. Hell, I haven't DONE karaoke in years. Literally maybe twice in the last 5-7 years.

I'm not even setup to record at home, at all. I'm just going to have to join you all in *spirit* because subbing karaoke is not in my immediate forecast. But I do have fond memories of WAY too many hours spent here posting & listening.

But that doesn't mean I can't be a smart@$$ here in the forums once in a while;)

Good to hear from you tho!
